Karen Hoekstra is an experienced marketing and communications professional with a strong background in graphic design and campaign management. Currently serving as the Marketing & Communications Manager at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy since August 2015, Karen leads visual and digital communications efforts, including managing the quarterly journal, The Foundation Review. Previous roles include coordinating the GRgives campaign for GivingTuesday, and serving as Marketing & Design Associate at The Salvation Army, where Karen created various marketing materials and managed brand standards. As a freelance graphic designer with Karen Creative, LLC, clients included Mercy Health and Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. Prior positions involved roles at Rivertown Media & Communications and the Home & Building Association of Greater Grand Rapids, contributing to diverse marketing projects and events.

Johnson Center for Philanthropy is an academic center within the Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Johnson Center provides: • Competency-based professional development • Applied research and evaluation • Resources and tools to transform communities for the public good We are proud to spearhead many first-of-their-kind leadership roles and publications that benefit the field of philanthropy. These include the Frey Chair for Family Philanthropy and the W.K. Kellogg Community Philanthropy Chair, both of which support original research in the field. We also publish “The Foundation Review,” the first peer-reviewed journal of philanthropy, four times per year.
