Tim Cavanaugh has a diverse work experience. Tim began their career in 1980 as a Captain with the Omaha Police Department, where they served until 2006. Tim then worked as the Head of Security at Dillards from 1988 to 2006. In 1999, Tim joined the Metropolitan Utilities District as a member of the Board of Directors. In 2003, they became a member of the Board of Directors for the Downtown Rotary Club of Omaha, and they also served as the President of the club. Finally, in 2007, Tim joined the Douglas County Treasurer's office as the Chief Deputy Treasurer.

Tim Cavanaugh's education history starts in 1974 when they attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Tim pursued a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Business Administration, completing their studies in 1978. From 1979 to 1980, Tim attended the Creighton University School of Law but did not obtain a degree. Tim then returned to the University of Nebraska at Omaha from 1982 to 1988, where they pursued a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Public Administration. Tim successfully completed their studies in 1988. In 2000, they attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy as a graduate student, focusing on Law Enforcement Management.
