Ryan Smith

Ryan Smith serves as a Partner at Duane Morris LLP since June 2014, specializing in patent portfolio development, evaluation, enforcement, and providing patent analysis for Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) and M&A activities. Prior to this role, Ryan worked as a patent attorney and IP Manager at the UCSD Technology Transfer Office, overseeing the intellectual property development process. Ryan's extensive experience in research and development includes a significant tenure at Illumina, where crucial inventions included the PAZAM polymer, foundational to DNA sequencing technologies, and contributions to the MegaBACE DNA Sequencer at GE Healthcare and Molecular Dynamics. Educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, a Doctor of Law (JD) from the University of San Diego School of Law, and postdoctoral research in Surface and Polymer Chemistry at Stanford University.
