Mark Burns has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Mark began their career as a Marketing Manager at Maytag from January 1989 to July 1991. Mark then worked as a Territory Manager at Jenn-Aire Pacific for a year before joining Sprint as a Senior Business Services Representative from 1992 to 1994. Mark also worked as a Teacher's Aide and Coach at La Jolla High School from 1993 to 1995.

In 1996, they started working as a Teacher at Benilde-St. Margaret's School until 1998. Following this, Mark joined the Dubuque Community School District, where they held various positions. Mark worked as a Teacher at Hempstead High School from August 1998 to January 2002. Mark then became an Assistant Principal at the same school from January 2002 to July 2004. Mark was then promoted to Principal at George Washington Middle School, where they served until June 2018. Most recently, they assumed the role of Executive Director of Secondary Education at the Dubuque Community School District in July 2018.

Mark Burns earned their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Business Administration, with a focus on Marketing, from Kansas State University in the years 1984 to 1988.
