Aamir Azhar

Fullstack Software Engineer at Duolingo

Aamir Azhar started their work experience at Bay Area Chess in 2005 as a Webmaster and later became a Tournament Organizer. In this role, they led and directed chess tournaments with a wide range of attendance and organized the 2014 tournament schedule which had over 100 events.

In 2016, Aamir worked as a Software Engineering Intern at Google, where they integrated translation for YouTube comments and implemented guided tooltip help for updates on the YouTube comments client-side.

From 2015 to 2018, Aamir served as a Resident Assistant at Duke University. Additionally, from 2015 to 2016, they held the position of Head Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for Computer Science 101, where they organized and led various educational sessions and trained other teaching assistants.

Aamir joined Capital One in 2017 as a Data and Machine Learning Engineer. Aamir delivered metrics for a company-wide migration process, performed and visualized sentiment analysis, and evaluated risk levels of access entitlements using machine learning algorithms.

Currently, Aamir is working at Duolingo as a Fullstack Software Engineer under New Initiatives, specializing in Duolingo Schools. Aamir has worked with backend microservices, the Android app, and web development using Java, Kotlin, Python, Spring WebFlux, and React TypeScript.

Aamir Azhar completed their education with a high school diploma from San Jose High School in the years 2010 to 2014. Aamir then pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at Duke University, from 2014 to 2018. In 2016, they had the opportunity to study Arabic Language and Literature at Middlebury in Jordan for a short period of time. Currently, Aamir is attending Columbia University, working towards earning a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Writing, starting in 2020 and expected to be completed in 2023.
