Gabriel Welsch

VP, Marketing & Communications at Duquesne University

Gabriel Welsch was named vice president for marketing and communications effective March 18, 2019. In his role, Welsch oversees strategy and operations for the University's functions in media relations, Web communications, marketing, advertising, printing, publications, and internal communications.

Prior to his appointment at Duquesne, Welsch served in several executive functions at Juniata College from 2007 to 2019. His last role was as vice president for strategic communication and marketing, in which he oversaw operations in marketing, branding and communications; digital and emerging media; and public relations.

Welsch served as Juniata's vice president for advancement and marketing from 2009 to 2018, during which he oversaw marketing operations as well as fundraising, alumni relations, and corporate and foundation relations. He led campaigns for facilities, endowment, and other needs that raised more than $95 million. During the 2013-2014 academic year, Welsch also held the post of vice president for enrollment, and from 2007 to 2009 he was assistant vice president for marketing.

Between 1998 and 2007, Welsch worked as an assistant to the dean for advancement and manager of publications and public relations for Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts at the University Park campus, during which time he was also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English.

He is past-president of the board of directors of CUPRAP: College and University Public Relations and Associated Professionals, and is a regular presenter at conferences on topics related to fundraising and marketing.

A native of Maine, Welsch earned his bachelor's and master of fine arts degrees in English at Penn State. He is the author of four books of poems, as well as scores of short stories, book reviews, and essays appearing in national literary periodicals. He teaches writing occasionally for the Writer's Center at the Chautauqua Institution.
