The experience of a child struggling with numbers is a painful experience of not only are they being left behind their peers, but there is also a social impact damage. A low number sense is a strong predictor of social and economic difficulties into adulthood. 

The journey into dyscalculia began in 2005 with parents and teachers reporting that the easiest maths was proving too challenging for some children. Our research in this area showed that 5-7% of the population present with this significant delay in processing numbers and had difficulty responding to the most basic number questions.
An image that is really hard to erase is of a child aged 9, who drew 32 marks to count 32 + 20 and then answered this as 32! This may have indicated that the child could not differentiate 32 from 20 in its magnitude, perhaps did not understand the symbol ‘+’ and had a poor sense of estimation.
