Sean Whitney

Engineering and Innovation Director at East Coast Dyes

Sean Whitney has a strong background in engineering and innovation, having held the position of Engineering and Innovation Director at East Coast Dyes since 2015. Sean played a crucial role in establishing the engineering department, innovation lab, new product development process, and supply network for the company.

Prior to this, Sean served as a Senior Project Engineer/Technical Services Manager at ThermoChem Recovery International, Inc. from 2008 to 2015. During this time, they led the commercialization of renewable energy technologies, including designing and building the world's first Trash-to-Fuel biorefinery. Sean also oversaw the scale-up of pilot systems for gasifiers, fischer tropsch reactors, pulsed combustion heaters, and biomass feeder systems.

Before joining ThermoChem Recovery International, Inc., Sean worked at Newell Rubbermaid from 2003 to 2008 as a New Product Design/Project Engineer. In this role, they were responsible for product development at various brands, such as Irwin, Amerock, and Bulldog. Notably, they successfully managed a large-scale rollout and coordinated multiple international suppliers, meeting all timelines. Sean also designed the SL6X chalk reel, which exceeded sales targets by 30% and outperformed the competition.

Sean Whitney graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) in Mechanical Engineering. Sean then pursued further education and obtained a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) with a focus on Design Leadership from The Johns Hopkins University - Carey Business School and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Design Leadership from the Maryland Institute College of Art. These degrees were completed between 2012 and 2014.
