Dr. Johnson has been a leader in the field of Eating Disorders for over 40 years. Currently he is a Senior Consultant at ERC, where he previously held the positions of Chief Clinical Officer, Chief Science Officer and Co-Director of the Family Institute. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma Medical School and formerly held faculty appointments at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and a tenured position at Northwestern University Feinberg Medical School.
Over his career he built four internationally recognized inpatient treatment programs that were regarded as Centers of Excellence, particularly for more severe forms of eating disorders. Prior to joining Eating Recovery Center he founded and directed the Eating Disorders Program at Laureate Psychiatric Hospital and was instrumental in establishing the Laureate Institute for Brain Research. He was the Founding Editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders, Founder of the Academy for Eating Disorders, Founder and Past President of the National Eating Disorders Association, Co-Founder of the International Conference of Eating Disorders and a Founding member of the Eating Disorders Research Society. He has authored over 100 research articles/book chapters and 3 books. He has been a National Institute of Mental Health funded researcher on topics ranging from genetics to family therapy.
Dr. Johnson has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Academy of Eating Disorders (AED), the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) as well as Distinguished Contribution Awards from the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Academy for Eating Disorders, Rogers Memorial Hospital and the American Red Cross. NEDA also honored Dr. Johnson by creating the Craig Johnson Award for Clinical Excellence and Training.
