Toyce Cotten possesses a diverse background in education, having served as a teacher at Edgecombe County Public Schools, Seoul Global High School from 2008 to 2009, and PG County Public Schools from 2007 to 2008. In addition to teaching, Toyce Cotten worked as a Consumer Solutions Representative at Embarq in 2006. Toyce Cotten holds a Master of Business Administration degree from TUI University and a Bachelor of Science in Science Education from North Carolina State University.

The district has 15 high quality schools with approximately 7,800 terrific students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Local students are distributed among well maintained and recently renovated buildings that compose 3 traditional high schools, an Early College High School, 4 middle schools, 5 elementary schools, a combination school (grades 4-6) and an alternative school.
