Joyce Malyn-Smith has extensive work experience in the field of workforce and human development. Joyce worked as the Director of Strategic Initiatives at EDC, where they focused on cultivating talent and helping workers develop skills for workplace success. Joyce also has a background in education, having spent more than 20 years as a classroom teacher and central office administrator with Boston Public Schools. In this role, they served as the Program Director for Occupational Instructional Design and was responsible for curriculum and professional development for Boston's career and technical education programs. Joyce also played a key role in transitioning these programs to student-centered competency-based learning. Joyce represented Boston Public Schools' career and technical education programs on various boards and built relationships with public and private partners.

Joyce Malyn-Smith received a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Education from American Metropolitan Jobs in 1971. Joyce then pursued a Master of Education degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Boston State Teacher's College, completing the program in 1974. Joyce later earned an Ed.D. in Career Development and Bilingual Education from Boston University, graduating in 1980.
