Joo Ho Whang

Director at Electric Power Research Institute

Kyung Hee University for about 30 years since 1991, serving as Dean of College of Engineering in 2013 and Executive Vice resident of Global Campus in 2015.

In addition to that, he has played a role as a top leader in the nuclear industry by serving as President of Korean Energy Society in 2013 and President of Korean Nuclear Society in 2016.

Starting from 1999 when he served as technical expert of Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning, Dr.Whang has been working in the areas of various nuclear technology and policy development as Member of Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation & Planning in 2006, Chairman of Government-led Technical Expert Committee in National Science & Technology Council in 2008, President of Korea Institute of Energy Research in 2010 and member of Atomic Energy Commission from 2013.

In particular, he played a crucial role in establishing nuclear export policy as Chairman of Advisory Board on Nuclear Power Plant Export from 2020 to 2022.

Dr.Whang was awarded Commendation of President in 2005 for his contribution in the process of selecting radioactive waste disposal site. His excellent leadership and authoritative influence were acknowledged in domestic nuclear industry as he also received the Iron Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in 2010 for his effort to export domestic nuclear power plants to the UAE.

Dr.Whang has made various contributions to domestic nuclear industry policy including planning and managing national nuclear R&D, building a policy to formulate public debate on spent fuel, enacting Radioactive Waste Management Act.as well as the Nuclear Safety Act.

Dr. Whang successfully developed a program related to nuclear decommissioning and disposal cost of spent fuel through making cooperation with specialized institutions from the U.S, and France. On top of that, he also demonstrated his global leadership as he attended numerous international conferences including Korea-US Nuclear Workshop as a leader in the nuclear industry and academia.

Dr.Whang received his B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Seoul National University and his M.S. and Ph. D. in Radioactive Waste Management, Nuclear Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S.A.
