Janet Colón Sapio-Mayta became a member of the Ellis Medicine Board of Trustees in June 2013.

Ms. Colón Sapio-Mayta is the director, Bureau of Interagency Coordination and Case Resolution for New York State Council on Children and Families, Rensselaer, NY. In this role, she provides oversight for issues and disputes that prevent access to services for at-risk children and youth. She works with various state agencies to provide support and policy to help children and their families. Ms. Colón Sapio-Mayta also spent 16 years at New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

Ms. Colón Sapio-Mayta earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Syracuse University, Syracuse NY and her master’s in social work from the University at Albany, Albany, NY. She is co-chair for the University at Albany Graduate School of Social Welfare Ladan Alomar Scholarship Endowment Fund; president and founding member of 100 Hispanic Woman, Inc, Capital District Chapter; founding member of Upstate Latino Alliance; and member of Schenectady Business & Professional Woman, National Organization of Women-New York State and Capital District YMCA Latino Young Conference Planning Committee.

She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including: “Education Advocate Award” by Centro Civico of Amsterdam, Inc; “Community Service Award” by Grace and Holy Innocents Church; “Latina Special Recognition Award” by National 100 Hispanic Women, Inc.; “Adult Latino Achiever Award” by Capital District YMCA Black & Latino Achievers; “Community Leadership Award” by Capital District 100 Hispanic Women; and “Women in Public Service Leadership Award” by The Center for Women in Government & Civil Society.
