Charles Girardot

Head Of Genome Biology Computational Support at EMBL

Charles Girardot has a diverse work experience in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics. Charles started their career in 1996 as a Research Assistant at Université de Strasbourg, where they conducted various research activities in molecular and cellular biology. In 1999, they worked as a Biotechnology Engineer at LION bioscience, where they were involved in identifying new DNA Polymerase related factors using advanced yeast two hybrid systems.

In 2000, they joined LION BIOSCIENCE as a Software Developer, responsible for designing and implementing the GeneHub component of the Lion Target Engine. Charles also worked on integrating the Gene Ontology with expression data analysis and classification.

From 2004 to 2013, Charles worked at EMBL as a Bioinformatician and Software Project Manager. Charles supervised the development of an EMBL-wide data storage and analysis platform and was involved in the development of different web application projects.

In 2013, they took on the role of Senior Bioinformatician in the Furlong Lab at EMBL, where they focused on NGS data analysis and the development of web sites for data publication.

Currently, Charles is working as a Data Analysis Consultant at VERAXA Biotech GmbH, starting from September 2021.

Overall, Charles Girardot has demonstrated expertise in computational biology, bioinformatics, software development, and data analysis throughout their career.

Charles Girardot began their education at Université de Franche-Comté from 1992 to 1994, where they obtained a DEUG in Maths, Chemistry, and Physics. Charles then attended the University of Strasbourg from 1994 to 1996, earning a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology and Structural Biology. In 1997, Charles enrolled at Pierre and Marie Curie University, completing a DIU in Applied Statistics. From 1998 to 2000, they pursued a Master's degree in Biotechnology at ENSTBB Bordeaux INP. Afterward, in 2000-2001, they studied Bioinformatics at Université de Bordeaux, obtaining another Master's degree. Finally, Charles completed their education by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biomathematics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology from Pierre and Marie Curie University from 2010 to 2012.
