Alex Athey has a long and varied work experience. Alex started in 1997 as a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Michigan, where they assisted in the conceptual design of a high efficiency spectrometer and fabricated a custom set of fiber optics. In 2002, they became an Instrument Scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science, where they engineered optical sensors and created processing algorithms to recover and extract information from extremely low signal-to-noise data. In 2006, they took on the role of Lead of the Emerging Security and Technology Division and Research Scientist at the Applied Research Laboratories of The University of Texas at Austin, where they managed a team of scientists, programmers, and engineers and identified and developed partnerships with academia, industry, and government. In 2007, they became a Tech Venture Advisor and Consultant, and Financial Consultant. In 2010, they took on the role of Technical Lead at the Advanced Energy Consortium (AEC). In 2012, they became a Visiting Associate Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 2018, they became the CTO and Co-Founder of ClearZone Technologies. In 2020, they became an Entrepreneur In Residence at the Austin Technology Incubator. Finally, in 2017, they became the CEO, CTO, and Co-Founder of En Solución, where they develop innovative food safety technology.
Alex Athey obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Physics from Pomona College between 1993 and 1997. Following this, they attended the University of Michigan and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Astrophysics in 2003.
