Jason Hockings

Principal Engineer Distribution Planning at Energy Queensland

Jason Hockings has a diverse work experience in the energy sector, with a focus on electrical engineering and network planning. Jason began their career at Ergon Energy in 2011 as an Undergraduate Electrical Engineer, specializing in Line Design Standards. Jason then moved on to roles in Line Maintenance Standards and Network Planning, where they developed new defect thresholds and conducted earthing risk analysis for line assets.

In 2014, Jason joined Energy Queensland as an Engineer Connections Assessment, where they managed the connection of complex load and generation into the network, conducted network modeling analysis, and oversaw multiple projects to meet customer expectations. Jason later took on managerial positions, acting as the Planning Manager for the Northern and Southern regions, leading and engaging planning teams to deliver customer connection assessments and proposals. Jason also provided technical leadership and expertise in planning, asset management, and connections assessment.

In 2018, Jason transitioned to the role of a Senior Network Planning Engineer, focusing on the development and planning of distribution and sub-transmission networks in North Queensland. Jason was responsible for identifying network limitations and developing projects to address them, as well as managing the Regulatory Investment Test for Distribution process. Their role also involved technical assessments for load and generator connections, fault studies, quality of supply investigation, and voltage management.

Jason briefly acted as the Manager of Network Development at Energy Queensland in 2023, before returning to their previous role as the Principal Engineer of Distribution Planning. In this current position, they provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise to a team responsible for complex customer connections, distribution network analysis, and the implementation of distribution augmentation projects. Jason prepares planning proposals comparing network and non-network solutions and provides engineering support to other Grid Planning teams.

Outside of their energy sector experience, Jason has served as a Board Member for Table Tennis Queensland since 2016. Jason is actively involved in policy development, financial management, major event organization, and strategic input to promote the sport.

Overall, Jason Hockings has a strong background in electrical engineering, network planning, project management, and leadership roles within the energy sector.

Jason Hockings attended CQUniversity from 2010 to 2014, where they completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) with First Class Honours. During the same period, they also obtained a Diploma of Professional Practice (Engineering) from CQUniversity. In December 2017, they achieved the Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) certification from The Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland. Additionally, in November 2017, they obtained the Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) certification from Engineers Australia.
