Peter S. Kim, PhD, is the Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University, Institute Scholar at Stanford ChEM-H, and Lead Investigator of the Infectious Disease Initiative at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub.

Dr. Kim is a pioneering scientist with over 30 years of experience in both academia and the biopharmaceutical industry and has unmatched experience taking groundbreaking products from bench to bedside. Dr. Kim was President of Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) from 2003 to 2013, where he oversaw Merck's global drug and vaccine research and development activities. During his tenure at MRL, Dr. Kim oversaw the approval of more than 20 new medicines and vaccines. Prior to his time at Merck, Dr. Kim was a Professor of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Member of The Whitehead Institute. There he conducted seminal research elucidating the way in which proteins enable viral membranes to fuse with cells.

Dr. Kim’s exceptional record of scientific achievement has resulted in his election to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. Dr. Kim is also a Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology and the Biophysical Society. As an advisor to 5AM Ventures Dr. Kim was one of the first scientists to recognize the potential of the EEV™ platform.
