Hugo McGuire has extensive experience in the fields of applied physics, molecular biology, informatics, ultrafast spectroscopy, and molecular synthesis. In 2016, they became the CEO and co-founder of eNUVIO. From 2014-2016, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University. From 2007-2014, they were a Ph.D. student at Université de Montréal, where they developed an expertise at the border between applied physics, molecular biology and informatics. During their Ph.D., they specialized in single-molecule fluorescence imaging and the combination of this technique to voltage-clamp electrophysiology in order to study ion channel molecular mechanisms. Hugo also developed informatics tools for biophysical analysis, notably a program for automating single fluorescent subunit counting data. Hugo also received training in ultrafast spectroscopy to study semiconductors and molecular synthesis (organic chemistry). Prior to their Ph.D., they were a M.Sc. student at Université de Montréal, where they developed a new method using single-molecule fluorescence and hidden Markov models to probe the cooperativity between single subunits of ion channels. In 2006, they received training in Medical Physics at Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec.
Hugo McGuire received their Bachelor of Science in Physics from Université Laval in 2007. Hugo then went on to pursue their Master of Science in Physics, Molecular Biophysics and Physiology at Université de Montréal and graduated in 2009. Finally, they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy in Physics, Molecular Biophysics and Physiology from Université de Montréal in 2014.
