Dennis Schmuland

Venture Partner at EPIC Ventures

I’m an agile digital health executive, family physician, serial entrepreneur, and visionary thought leader who thrives on organizing genius, scaling, and orchestrating diverse and unexpected resources & teams to grow mindshare, marketshare, and revenue. My understanding, professional connections, and awareness of the idiosyncrasies of finance, delivery, and health behavior domains of healthcare enable me to spot and avoid the doomed-to-fail pursuit of shiny objects in the new quadruple aim health economy (better health, outcomes, affordability, clinician productivity).

My past role as US Chief Strategy Officer involved thought leadership, strategic innovation, collaborative C-suite relationships, high leverage partner recruiting, and driving game-changing digital transformation impact and evidence with customers, partners, and internal business groups across payer, provider, and life sciences verticals.

In 2005 I founded the US health insurance vertical and served as the Worldwide Managing Director, Health Plan Industry until 2012. During that time, in 2009, I received the distinguished Microsoft Circle of Excellence Platinum Club award for exceptional business leadership, thought leadership and strategic innovation.

I hold a doctorate in medicine from the University of Washington School of Medicine, am a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP). I obtained undergraduate degrees in both Psychology and Chemistry from Seattle Pacific University, where I graduated summa cum laude and received the Distinguished President’s Citation award.

I serve on the boards of the American Heart Association, Proskriptive Inc, Managed Healthcare Executive editorial board, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Culture of Health Expert Advisory Board, Advisory Board of the University of Washington School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine Primary Care Innovation Lab, advisory board of the University of Washington Master in Health and Health Information Management, ActX advisory board, and GLG Institute faculty advisor.
