Philip Shelton has a diverse work experience spanning multiple roles and industries. Philip began their career in 1983 as a Cryptologist in the U.S. Navy, where they excelled in translating and analyzing Soviet naval intelligence. After leaving the Navy in 1988, Shelton joined SAS Institute, where they held various positions over the years. Philip started as a Technical Editor and Proofreader before transitioning to the role of Technical Writer, where they were responsible for writing documentation for the "base SAS" product. Shelton then became an IT (Web) Project Manager, leading multiple projects in creating web-based e-commerce and knowledge-base applications. During their tenure, they also served as a Software Development Project Manager, coordinating internationalization and localization efforts. In 2010, Shelton briefly worked at Teradata Corporation as a Software Development Project Manager in liaison with SAS, ensuring the on-time delivery of software. Finally, in 2011, Shelton returned to SAS Institute as a Project Manager in the Research and Development Division, where they led projects to publish documentation across various channels and supported the development team for SAS version 9 software. Shelton's most recent role is as a Project Manager at Etix, a position they started in 2022.

Philip Shelton attended North Carolina State University from 1989 to 1990, where they pursued classes in writing and public administration. Prior to that, their education history includes attending Defense Language Institute in 1984. As for their undergraduate studies, they completed a BA in Political Science from North Carolina State University in 1983.
