Helena de Carvalho Gomes has a diverse work experience in the field of public health and medicine. Helena has worked at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) since 2008, where they held various roles. From 2015 to 2019, they served as the Head of the Scientific Advice Coordination Section, and since 2020, they have been the Head of the Scientific Process and Methods Section. In these positions, they have been responsible for research coordination, infectious disease foresight, and the development of evidence-based public health tools and methods. Helena also worked as a Senior Expert Evidence-Based Public Health at ECDC since 2012, providing methodological and procedural support to the Center, with a specific focus on communicable disease epidemiology and prevention. Prior to joining ECDC, they worked as an Expert in vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) at the same organization. Helena's earlier experience includes working as an Expert in preventive medicine at the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Germany and as a medical doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology at the University Hospital Hannover. In their role at the hospital, they provided routine clinical care, conducted research on HPV and cervical cancer screening, and managed the outpatient clinic for dysplasia and colposcopy.

Helena de Carvalho Gomes completed their education in two stages. From 1991 to 1998, they attended Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where they obtained a Staatsexamen degree in Medicine. Following this, Helena pursued further education in the field of Public Health from 2002 to 2005 at Technische Universität Berlin, earning an MPH degree.
