Mattijs Kempynck

Policy Assistant To The Deputy-director General For Trade at European Commission

Mattijs Kempynck currently serves as a Policy Assistant to the Deputy-Director General for Trade at the European Commission, a position held since June 2020. Responsibilities include supporting directorates B and C, which focus on trade with Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, as well as sustainable development, digital trade, investment, and intellectual property. In addition, Mattijs has experience as a Legal Officer in DG Trade, overseeing dispute settlement and legal aspects of trade policy, and is a permanent official since August 2022. Previous roles include participation in the Junior Professionals Programme within the European Commission and serving as a Teaching Assistant at KU Leuven’s Institute for European Law. Early career experiences include internships at the Embassy of Belgium in Denmark and Eubelius, providing foundational legal experience. Academically, Mattijs holds a Master of Law in Economic and International Law from KU Leuven and has completed an exchange program at the University of Lausanne.
