Ferny Reyes has extensive experience working in the education sector. They started their career as an AP Social Studies Instructor and Course Leader at YES Prep Public Schools, where they focused on AP course development and coached history teachers. They also founded and coached UIL Academics at YES Prep Southwest. Reyes then worked as a History Teacher at Achievement First, teaching AP World History and Global History. They also served as an internal test developer for AP courses and coached the Speech and Debate team. Reyes continued their career as a US History and AP US History Instructor at MESA Charter High School, where they achieved a high pass rate on the US History Regents and developed a successful Speech and Debate program. Most recently, they served as a History Curriculum Specialist at Democracy Prep Public Schools, providing support and coaching for teachers and administrators, creating curricular materials, and managing curriculum associations for middle school and high school history. Currently, Reyes is the Network Director of Data and Assessment at Excel Academy Charter Schools.
Ferny Reyes completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies and Teacher Preparation from Yale University from 2006 to 2010. In 2020 and 2021, Ferny attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where they obtained a Master of Education degree in School Leadership, with a focus on School Developer. Additionally, Ferny has obtained a certification in Social Studies 8-12 from the Texas Education Agency, although the specific month and year of obtaining the certification are not provided.

Excel Academy was founded in 2003 with the mission to provide a high-quality education to students in East Boston and Chelsea Massachusetts, communities that are predominantly low-income and Latinx and historically have faced significant social and educational barriers. Our success in Massachusetts is proof that the opportunity gap can be closed. At Excel Academy Charter Schools, we believe that when a student has the support and tools to pursue a productive post-secondary pathway aligned to their personal identity and values, it can fundamentally change their life trajectory. Over the years, we have grown from one middle school to a network of four schools with 1,400 students in grades 5 to 12. In the fall of 2022 we will welcome a founding class of 5th graders to help us launch Excel Academy Rhode Island. By 2032, Excel Rhode Island will run 4 schools serving over 2,100 students from Providence, Central Falls, and North Providence. We present our students with educational experiences that allow them to grow and discover their best selves so that when they leave our halls, they can successfully navigate all of the post-secondary options available to them. At Excel Academy we learn from our students, families, and staff and make improvements. We have increasingly adapted to provide a holistic education that values our community as collaborators in the learning process, social-emotional support, equity for diverse learners, and fosters identity development.
