Thomas Donnelly

Director of Anesthesia at FACE

A graduate of Queen’s Medical School and the University of Toronto Anesthesia Program, Dr. Donnelly heads the anesthesiology services at FACE Cosmetic Surgery. While anesthesia can be a source of anxiety for many patients, Dr. Donnelly’s gentle and comforting approach puts even the most nervous patients at ease. Going beyond simply putting patients “to sleep”, his attention to detail ensures the highest levels of safety during your procedure.

For most facial plastic surgery procedures, intravenous sedation anesthesia is used. With this technique, patients are monitored very carefully to makes sure that they are fully asleep and do not have any awareness or pain during the surgery. In comparison to a full general anesthetic, during intravenous sedation, patients are not intubated or placed on a ventilator—they continue to breathe on their own. We find this technique to greatly decrease the side effects of a full anesthetic with less nausea and vomiting and a quicker recovery period. For patients that have medical comorbidities or are having a more complex procedure, Dr. Asaria and Dr. Donnelly may recommend a general anesthetic which would be administered at the Hospital.
