Zhané James-Marshall

Sonny Zhan is an experienced Patent Attorney and External Submissions Lead in Intellectual Property at IBM since 2019, specializing in patent applications for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cognitive computing, and software security. Prior to IBM, Sonny Zhan served as Corporate Counsel for Intellectual Property at Welch Allyn from 2009 to 2018, where responsibilities included collaborating with research and business teams to secure intellectual property protections and managing patent portfolios in software, electrical, and medical device technologies. Earlier experience includes working as a Patent Attorney at Merchant & Gould P.C. and holding various engineering and legal positions at Boston Scientific from 1998 to 2005. Sonny Zhan holds a JD, cum laude, in Intellectual Property Law from Mitchell Hamline School of Law and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
