Joe Anderson has a diverse work experience in law enforcement. Joe began their career as a Patrol Officer at the Fargo Police Department in 1997 and worked their way up through various positions, including Sergeant, Lieutenant, and then Deputy Chief in different divisions such as Field Services, Administrative Services, Criminal Investigations, and Neighborhood Services. Their most recent role at the Fargo Police Department is Deputy Chief in the Professional Standards Division, which they started in January 2022. In addition to their work at the Police Department, Joe Anderson also served in the ND Air National Guard as a Security Forces Commander from June 2010 to June 2014.

Joe Anderson has a diverse education history. In 1991, they attended Minnesota State University Moorhead and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Criminal Justice/Police Science in 1995. In 1996, they attended Alexandria Technical College, specializing in Law Enforcement Skills. In 2009, they enrolled in the Northwestern University - Center for Public Safety - School of Police Staff & Command - Session 283. In 2012, they attended the FBI National Academy Session 250. Lastly, in 2013, they participated in the FMWF Chamber Leadership program.
