Brian Rectanus

Sr. Director, Engineering - Security Products at Fastly

Brian Rectanus has a diverse work experience spanning from 1998 to the present day. Brian started their career at Virginia Tech as a Programmer/Analyst from 1998 to 1999 and later became a Computer Systems Engineer from 1999 to 2007.

In 2007, Brian joined Breach Security as a Senior Engineer, where they led development on the ModSecurity open-source project and developed and supported the company's product line until 2009. Brian then had a brief stint as a Contractor at the Open Information Security Foundation from 2009 to 2010.

From 2010 to 2016, Brian worked at Qualys as a Director of Engineering.

In 2016, they joined Signal Sciences as a Software Engineer/Manager and played a significant role in developing the industry's first Next Generation Web Application Firewall (NGWAF). Signal Sciences was later acquired by Fastly.

At Fastly, Brian has held several roles, including Sr. Engineering Manager from 2020 to 2021, Director of Engineering - Security Products from 2021 to 2021, and their current position as Sr. Director of Engineering - Security Products, which they started in December 2021.

Brian Rectanus attended Kansas State University from 1992 to 1998, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. In addition to their degree, Brian Rectanus also holds certifications including the GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) and the GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA) from GIAC, which they obtained in July 2006 and November 2005, respectively.
