Product Security Architect at Fastly

Jos Purvis has a diverse work experience in the field of computer science and security. Currently, Jos works at Fastly as a Product Security Architect, starting in June 2022. Alongside this role, they are also an Adjunct Faculty at North Carolina State University, teaching an undergraduate class on practical uses of cryptography starting in January 2022. Before joining Cisco Systems, Jos worked at the SANS Institute from 2001 to 2011. Initially, they served as an Authorized Grader, grading practicals for the GIAC GCUX certification. They also co-authored two versions of the book "Securing Linux: A Survival Guide for Linux Security" and collaborated with the organization on certification and community security standards efforts.

Jos also has experience in the corporate sector, having worked at The Walt Disney Co. as a Sr. Security Analyst from January 2003 to December 2006. In this role, they were responsible for security architecture across the enterprise organization, leading projects in intrusion detection/prevention systems, security event correlation and analysis, security policy design, SAP application security, vulnerability and threat analysis, and operating system security standards.

Additionally, Jos has worked as a Sr. Information Security Engineer at RedSiren from July 2000 to December 2002, Veritect from July 2000 to December 2002, and Trident Data Systems from July 2000 to December 2002. In these roles, they worked as a security consultant for various clients, including state government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Their responsibilities included firewall design and implementation, conducting training, installing/upgrading firewalls, and conducting security posture analyses with a focus on Unix/Linux security and security policy analysis.

Jos Purvis received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Music, with a minor in Information Science, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998. In 2009, they went on to earn a Master of Science (MS) degree in Computer and Information Systems Security/Information Assurance from Boston University. Furthermore, Jos Purvis obtained several additional certifications, including the GIAC Certified UNIX Security Administrator from SANS in December 2000, the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) from the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc. (ISC)² in August 2007, and the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) from ISACA in February 2016.
