Wim Jennes is an experienced expert in plant health, currently working at the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain since 2016, focusing on quarantine organisms harmful to plants and plant products. Previously, from 1999 to 2015, Jennes was a researcher at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, where work involved studying mechanisms of immune protection to HIV, host gene association studies, and molecular epidemiology. Jennes began a career in 1998 as a project engineer at Cargill, optimizing wastewater treatment processes, and also held a research position at Stellenbosch University in 1997, investigating the antimicrobial activity of lactic acid bacteria. Jennes holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Antwerp and a degree in Bioengineering, specializing in Chemistry, Industrial Microbiology, and Environmental Technology from KU Leuven.
