Susan Barr has a diverse and extensive work experience in architecture and construction. Susan is currently a Project Architect at FGM Architects. Prior to this, they held various roles at the City of Austin, including Project Coordinator in the Redevelopment division, Acting Chief Plans Examiner in the Development Services Department, Plans Examiner Manager, and Building Inspector Supervisor. In these positions, they demonstrated leadership skills and fiscal responsibility, managing teams and budgets. Susan also worked as a Senior Planner and Technical Plans Examiner in the Planning and Development Review Department, where they reviewed complex residential projects and engaged in community outreach. Susan also worked as a LEED Construction Manager at IPS, contributing to the achievement of a LEED Silver equivalency rating for a project. At OWP/P | CANNONDESIGN, they served as an Arch III and was responsible for the construction contract administration of high school campuses in the Cayman Islands. Prior to that, they worked as an Arch II at Perkins&Will, where they worked on various notable projects, including the Block 37 project in Chicago and the International Bilingual School in Dalien, China. Susan started their career as an Arch I at OWP/P, where they gained experience in design competitions and construction closeouts. Susan Barr, AIA, LEED AP BD-C, CDT, TSBPE, ICC has a comprehensive education history in the field of architecture and related disciplines. Susan began their education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BSAS) degree from 1993 to 1997. Susan then went on to pursue a Master of Architecture (M Arch) degree from the University of Illinois Chicago from 2002 to 2004.
In addition to their formal degrees, Susan has engaged in various educational programs and certifications throughout their career. In 2010, they completed the "Eng 498 - Energy & Sustainable Engineering" program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Two years later, in 2012, they participated in the Small Business Development Program at The University of Texas at Austin, focusing on the development of small businesses.
Susan has also obtained numerous certifications to enhance their professional qualifications. These certifications include Construction Documents Technology (CDT) certification from the Construction Specifications Institute in 2010 and LEED AP Building Design + Construction certification from the US Green Building Council in 2004. Susan is recognized as an Architect by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation since March 2008 and by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners since October 2012.
In terms of specialized certifications related to building inspection and code compliance, Susan has obtained several qualifications from the International Code Council (ICC). These include the Building Inspector - B5 certification in August 2021, Commercial Building Inspector - B2 certification in July 2021, Commercial Building Plans Examiner - B3 certification in July 2021, Residential Building Inspector - B1 certification in 2017, Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner - 79 certification in 2017, Residential Mechanical Inspector - M1 certification in 2017, and Residential Plans Examiner - R3 certification in September 2019.
