Mike Koch has a diverse range of work experience, starting in 1984 as a Secondary English Teacher at Norview Senior High School. From 1989 to 2009, they held various roles at Fannie Mae, including Vice President of Marketing Services and Customer Education, overseeing customer marketing and communications, CRM, strategic research, and segmentation. In 2010, they worked as a Vice President at Freddie Mac, specifically in Offerings Market Management. From 2012 to 2017, they worked in Garrett County, MD Economic Development as the Executive Director for Community Planning & Development, leading a newly created department and developing infrastructure to support business growth. From 2015 to 2017, they served as the Executive Director at FRESHFARM Markets, promoting food and environmental education and economic opportunities for local farmers. Since 2000, they have been the President & Co-Founder of FireFly Farms, Inc., a successful artisan goat's milk cheese manufacturing and distribution venture, which has earned numerous awards and launched a cow's milk cheese line in 2015.

Mike Koch attended William & Mary from 1980 to 1984, where they completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. Before that, they briefly attended Boston University in 1979 and left without obtaining a degree or specifying a field of study.
