Clay Shumway began their work experience as a Critical Care Technician at UPMC in 2007, where they worked until 2010. Clay then joined Boy Scouts of America in 2010 and held various roles, including District Executive, Senior District Executive, District Director, Interim Director of William H Pouch Scout Camp, and Director of Alpine Scout Camp & Reeves Lodge Conference Center. Clay worked at Boy Scouts of America until 2020. In 2021, Clay became the Operations Manager - Outdoor School at Whitewater, where they worked until 2022. Currently, they are the Partnerships Manager at Flipcause, starting in 2023.

Clay Shumway holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in American History from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to their degree, they have obtained several certifications throughout their career. These certifications include a Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from the University of South Florida Muma College of Business, obtained in May 2021. Clay is also a Leave No Trace Master Educator, certified by NOLS in August 2013. Clay has certifications in Certified Day Camp Administration (obtained in June 2019) and Certified Resident Camp Director (obtained in March 2019) from the Boy Scouts of America. Furthermore, they are a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certified by the National Recreation and Park Association, obtained in April 2021.
