Laurie Carney

Senior Director Of Development And Outreach at Florida Atlantic University

Laurie Carney has over 30 years of work experience in various roles within the nonprofit sector. Laurie started their career at Palm Beach Blood Bank in 1984, where they served as Assistant Director of Administrative Services and Donor Recruitment. In this role, they were responsible for strategic planning, community solicitations, contract negotiations, marketing, and budgeting.

From 1990 to 1993, Laurie worked at New York Blood Center as the Manager of Donor Recruitment in the Long Island Blood Services Division. Here, they managed donor recruiters, identified new business opportunities, and coordinated special events to achieve collection goals. Laurie was also involved in a pilot program to integrate competitor's services and expand collection opportunities.

In 1995, Laurie joined United Way of Palm Beach County as the Campaign Division Director. Laurie successfully restructured and increased the annual Residential Campaign to over $850,000. Laurie also developed a campaign structure for the new Leadership Giving program and took over the corporate Professional Division.

From 1996 to 1999, Laurie served as the Vice President of Donor Recruitment at South Florida Blood Banks. In this role, they oversaw donor recruitment, administration, and marketing in three counties. Laurie exceeded budgeted recruitment goals and expanded market penetration.

Since 1999, Laurie has been working at Florida Atlantic University as the Senior Director of Development and Outreach. Laurie is responsible for major and principle gifts, endowment and legacy gifts, donor development, gift solicitations, proposal writing, and donor stewardship. Laurie collaborates with senior leadership to determine fundraising priorities and integrates donor intentions with university goals.

Throughout their career, Laurie has demonstrated exceptional organizational, leadership, and motivational skills. Laurie has a passion for inspiring philanthropic plans and legacy gifts.

Laurie Carney obtained a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) Certification from The American College in 2013. Laurie also holds a BSE degree in Recreation Therapy with a minor in Music from the State University of New York Cortland. Additionally, Laurie has a Master's of Public Administration degree in Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University. Laurie has additional certifications including a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® and a Charitable Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP), both earned from The American College of Financial Services.
