We must cut emissions to prevent global warming. Emissions reductions from sectors such as industry and transport require increased electrification. The transition necessitates a holistic approach for planning various energy infrastructures and carriers, like electricity, heat, biofuels, natural gas and hydrogen. Furthermore, more efficient heating of buildings could release electricity for other purposes. This will reduce the need to expand the power system and the impact on nature as a result.

The interplay between all the elements of the energy system is complex. FME InterPlay uses models to understand the alternatives that are available for system development. The models provide insights into the consequences of various solutions with respect to emissions, land use, costs, and security of energy supply. Models, data, and methods will be made available on an open platform.

Recommendations about markets, regulations, and incentives to enable efficient energy system integration are also a core focus of InterPlay.

Five case studies will enable InterPlay to understand how comprehensive energy system planning can contribute to a more efficient future system. The case studies cover Norway, the North Sea and the three municipalities: Bodø, Orkland and Oslo.
