Fondazione Teatro di San Carlo

Teatro di San Carlo is the most ancient opera house still performing in Europe. Based in the historical heart of Naples, it is worldwide renowned for its great music tradition expressed through more than 250 performances of opera, ballet and music every year. Teatro San Carlo Orchestra was born in 1737 and has been for centuries one of the most prestigious music groups worldwide: in the XIX cent. even Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi composed some of their masterpieces right for this Orchestra. The Orchestra is now lead by Dan Ettinger, as Music Director. The Choir was founded a couple of centuries later to get a stable vocal ensemble for San Carlo's opera and concerts both in Italy and abroad; José Luis Basso is the actual Chorus Master. The Corps de Ballet is as ancient and prestigious as its name Theatre: its first performance was, in fact, for the opening night of November 4th 1737. Since then it has grown in its prestige for centuries and at the end of the war the Company established its place by hosting the greatest soloists of our time, from Margot Fonteyn to Carla Fracci and Ekaterina Maximova, from Rudolf Nureyev to Vladimir Vassiliev, to whom the choreography of many performances have been entrusted. The contribution of Roland Petit has been significant in recent years and we fondly remember his The Bat and Duke Ellington Ballet. The Company, in the years, has been directed by great dancers like Carla Fracci, Elisabetta Terabust, Anna Razzi. The Corps de Ballet is now guided by Clotilde Vayer. Looking for the balance between tradition and innovation to increase accessibility is a key issue for Teatro San Carlo. That is the reason why the House has been investing in international touring, in the work of the Education Department and in the usage of Web 2.0 Marketing Tools, always keeping an awake sight on its extraordinary artistic heritage.
