Carel obtained a Master of Philosophy - MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise from the University of Cambridge, a Master's Degree in Master of Intellectual Property from the University of Technology Sydney, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in Law from the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika, a M.Sc. in Genetics from the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria, a B.Sc(Hons) in Genetics from the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria, and a B.Sc. in Genetics from the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria. Additionally, Carel Smit holds certifications as a Registered Australian Patent Attorney from the Professional Standards Board (obtained in November 2009), an Attorney of the High Court from the High Court of Northern Gauteng (obtained in November 2002), and a South African Patent Attorney from the SAIIPL - South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (obtained in November 2002).
