Captain Galen Johnston has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Captain Galen started their career in 1969 as a Sr. Technical Instructor at Verizon, where they provided live equipment hands-on training lab instruction and certified testing until 2018. In 1982, they became a Boating Consultant under their own company, Captain Galen Johnston. Captain Galen then joined the USCG Auxiliary, Brandon 74 in 1991 as a Flotilla Staff Officer - Operations (Air-Surface). In 2007, they became the President of Surface Masters Cleaning & Restoration, Inc., where they operated and managed the operations of the company and provided technical expertise for restoration procedures until 2011. More recently, in 2019, they worked as an Operations Training Specialist/Captain at Freedom Boat Club and as a Captain for environment/educational tours with meal options at Latitudes Tours, LLC.

Captain Galen Johnston began their education journey in 1968 at Ball State University, where they studied Industrial Arts until 1969. Afterward, they attended the Cleveland Institute of Electronics from 1970 to 1972, focusing on obtaining First Class Radio Licenses. In 1973, they enrolled at Indiana University Kokomo, where they studied Operational Supervision until 1975. Additionally, in May 1982, Captain Johnston obtained the certification of Senior Master/Captain in USCG Merchant Marine Captain - Near Coastal.
