Mr. Xuereb joined the Malta Police as an officer cadet in 1990. His first posting was at district policing. Later in 1992, he was posted to the Immigration Section within the Special Branch of the Police. Until Malta’s accession to the EU in 2004, and later accession to Schengen in 2007, Mr. Xuereb paved the way to ensure compliance with the Schengen Acquis. He remained in this post for 11 years, being responsible for practically all issues related to Immigration. He also represented Malta in several EU working groups. In 2003, Mr. Xuereb was promoted to Police Superintendent, but he was retained at Immigration for another 14 years. Subsequently, he took the role as Management Board alternate member in 2005, and shortly after advanced to Management Board member. Furthermore, Mr. Xuereb continued as an instructor on Immigration matters at the Police Academy and assisted in drafting new Immigration-related legislation. In 2017, Mr. Xuereb was promoted to Assistant Commissioner, a post he holds to date. In his current remit, he continues to manage the Immigration, but he is also responsible for the Passenger Information Unit, Counter-terrorism unit, Sirene, Interpol, Europol, EU co-ordination office, Police Missions abroad and future ETIAS.
