As an aquatic environmental scientist, Dr. Campbell studies contaminants in the environment and freshwater food web interactions across Canada and around the world, including sub-Saharan Africa, China and South America. Dr. Campbell has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, presented over 150 papers at conferences across the world, and has been invited to multiple organizations and universities to share her research.
Dr. Campbell holds a Senior Research Fellow as a professor at Saint Mary's University in Nova Scotia, Canada. Prior to her current job, she was a tenured faculty member who held a prestigious Canada Research Chair award at Queen's University's School of Environmental Studies and Department of Biology. She has supervised over 50 research theses by graduate and undergraduate students at both universities.
Dr. Campbell currently sits on the Provincial Advisory Board for the Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate, with the purpose of developing recommendations and advising on accessibility standards for "Access by Design 2030" government mandate." Her previous board engagement includes service on the Accessible Education Standards Committee for the Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate, with the purpose of establishing accessible educational standards by 2020 for all educational systems in Nova Scotia, including pre-school, K-12, post-secondary and adult education; on the Saint Mary’s University Board of Governors (2017-2020); on the Canadian Hearing Society's Provincial Board of Directors, which included service on the executive committee, the governance committee as its chair, and the 2014-2015 Chief Executive Officer search committee; and on the Board of Directors of the Halifax Regional Affiliate of the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians (SDHHNS). She presided over the International Association of Great Lakes Research Board. Dr. Campbell received a national Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 award in 2009 for her contributions to both academia and community.
Dr. Campbell holds a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Waterloo, a master's degree in biological sciences and an honors bachelor of science degree in zoology, both from the University of Alberta.
