Elgene Lim has extensive work experience in the field of medicine, with a focus on breast cancer research and treatment.
Starting in 2000, Lim worked as an Internal Medicine Registrar at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. They then became a Medical Oncology Fellow at the same institution from 2004 to 2006.
From 2006 to 2009, Lim pursued a PhD at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
In 2010, Lim joined the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow, and later became an Instructor in Medicine from 2012 to 2013.
In 2014, Lim worked as an Associate Professor and Medical Oncologist at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute and the Olivia Newton John Cancer & Wellness Centre.
Since 2015, Lim has held several positions concurrently. They are currently a Professor of Medicine and Principal Cancer Theme Lead at UNSW, starting in 2021. Lim also serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at UNSW, a position they held from 2015 to 2021. Additionally, Lim holds the role of Laboratory Head at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where they lead the Connie Johnson breast cancer research group. They have been in this position since 2015. Lim is also a Senior Staff Oncologist at St Vincent's Health Network Sydney, where they lead the breast oncology services at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre.
Throughout their career, Lim's research interests have focused on steroid hormone receptor signalling in breast tumors and identifying ways to sensitize breast cancer to endocrine therapies. Their work has involved clinically focused laboratory research, including the establishment of patient-derived breast tumor xenografts in mice and evaluation of novel therapies in preclinical breast cancer models.
Elgene Lim began their education at Raffles Institution from 1985 to 1988, where they obtained their O levels. Elgene then attended Trinity Grammer in 1989 for their VCE. In 1990, Lim enrolled at the University of Melbourne, where they studied Medicine and earned their MBBS degree in 1995. Following this, they pursued further specialization in Medical Oncology at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians from 2004 to 2006, completing their FRACP degree. Lim continued their education at the University of Melbourne, focusing on Molecular Biology, and successfully obtained their PhD in 2009.
