Mathieu Bastian

Mathieu Bastian has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and companies. Mathieu began their career as an intern at Fondation Maison des sciences de l'homme, where they worked on rebuilding a graph visualization software. Mathieu then worked at Linkfluence as a software engineer, developing network visualization and analysis features. At Google, they served as a Summer of Code Mentor for the Gephi organization and supervised students in proposal writing and technical mentorship. At INIST, they worked as a software engineer and designed a Visual Analytics prototype for large academic data.

In 2007, Mathieu co-founded Gephi, a leading large graph visualization open-source platform, where they served as the Founder and Tech Lead. Mathieu was responsible for technical aspects until mid-2019. Mathieu later joined LinkedIn as a Staff Data Scientist, specializing in building large data pipelines and relevancy algorithms for data products. Mathieu also led a team as an Engineering Manager, focusing on building data-driven products.

In 2016, Mathieu joined GetYourGuide as the Director of Data Science & Analytics. Mathieu built the company's data team from scratch and grew it to 25+ people. Mathieu established data analytics and data engineering teams, introduced data lakes and data engineering foundations, and transformed the data science function into data products with software engineering best practices. Mathieu also managed performance marketing budgets using automated bidding algorithms.

At GetYourGuide, Mathieu also held the role of VP Engineering (Interim), where they managed all of Engineering for 15 months and was a member of the Executive team. Mathieu introduced a career framework and the Engineering Management function, overhauled hiring processes, and collaborated on strategy setting.

In their current role as the Director of Data Products, ML/AI at GetYourGuide, Mathieu leads the charge on LLMs and Generative AI strategy. Mathieu continuously delivers business impact through new data products and ML algorithm improvements. Mathieu is responsible for growing the Data Products team and established a Machine Learning Platform strategy and team. Mathieu is a member of the Engineering Leadership group and regularly speaks at internal and external events.

Mathieu Bastian completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Strasbourg from 2003 to 2006. Mathieu then pursued a Master of Science degree in Computer Science at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC) from 2006 to 2009. In addition, they also studied at the University of Twente for one year from 2007 to 2008, where they earned another Master of Science degree in Computer Science.
