Gonçalo Cardoso

Gonçalo Cardoso is a seasoned optimization engineer and data scientist with extensive experience in energy systems and civil engineering. Currently serving as a Sr. Staff Optimization Engineer at Powerline since June 2025, Gonçalo previously held the role of Principal Data Scientist - Optimization at Stem, Inc. from October 2018 to April 2025, where proprietary AI/optimization models were developed for various energy applications. At Berkeley Lab, Gonçalo worked in multiple roles from October 2011 to October 2020, including Principal Scientific Engineering Associate, leading efforts in distributed energy resource modeling and optimization, and contributed to the development of the Distributed Energy Resources - Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM). Additional experience includes civil engineering projects focused on water resource planning and operational research during academic pursuits, culminating in a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems from Instituto Superior Técnico.
