Senior Data Scientist at Global Fishing Watch

As a senior data scientist, Jaeyoon Park helps identify vessels around the world and analyzes their fishing activities using various satellite technologies. Jaeyoon builds a comprehensive and complete global database of vessel identities as core data for various Global Fishing Watch’s products and fisheries research. In his capacity as the Asia research lead, Jaeyoon leads the research projects in the region in collaboration with fisheries research institutes and national government agencies, with partners that include the Republic of Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam.

For more than 15 years, Jaeyoon has been working at the intersection of technology and conservation. Prior to Global Fishing Watch, his experiences ranged from lab research on wastewater treatment at Veolia Environnement, to managing business engagement at World Wildlife Fund-Korea, and climate policy support at the United Nations Environment Programme for Asia and the Pacific. He holds a bachelor of science degree in computer science from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea, and a master of science in environmental engineering from Ecole des Mines Paris, France. Jaeyoon codes mainly in Python and SQL and loves swimming and playing the guitar.
