Sergey Karayev is the head of AI for STEM at Turnitin where he explores paths to accelerate development of AI technologies for STEM assessment. Sergey began at Turnitin in 2018, following Turnitin’s acquisition of his company Gradescope, which he co-founded in 2014. Gradescope enables instructors to grade paper-based exams, online homework, and programming projects on one platform, with AI assistance.
Sergey holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley where he researched deep learning for visual style recognition, reinforcement learning for object recognition, point-cloud-aided object detection, and probabilistic visual features. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington.
