Tom Burton

Director, External Affairs & Public Policy at GoCardless

Tom Burton has extensive work experience in the field of external affairs, public policy, and strategy. Tom is currently employed as the Director of External Affairs & Public Policy at GoCardless since August 2022. Prior to that, they worked at Klarna as the Head of Public Policy & Strategy for the EU & UK from February 2021 to July 2022. From October 2017 to February 2021, they held the position of Senior Director at FTI Consulting.

Tom also has a strong background in the banking industry, having worked at Barclays from 2010 to 2017. Tom'sroles at Barclays include Vice President Government Relations (September 2014 to September 2017), Vice President, Corporate Banking Origination (October 2012 to September 2014), Vice President, Debt Finance COO (January 2012 to October 2012), and Public Affairs Manager (March 2010 to December 2011).

Before joining Barclays, Tom worked at Citigate Dewe Rogerson as a Senior Account Executive from June 2007 to February 2010. During this time, they provided political advice to clients in various sectors and pitched for new business contracts. Tom was also seconded to Lloyds TSB for six months to assist with managing the impact of the HBOS integration.

Additionally, Tom had a brief internship experience at DLA Piper in June and July 2006.

Tom Burton earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Politics from the University of Nottingham, studying from 2002 to 2005. Tom then pursued a Master of Arts (MA) degree in International Security and Intelligence at King's College London from 2006 to 2007.
