Priscila Lucas, PhD

Priscila Lucas, PhD has a diverse work experience in the scientific field. In 2009, they were a Research Assistant at the Federal University of Lavras, where they worked on a project to detect microorganisms in corn seeds through genetic techniques. In 2012, they became a Professor at the same university, teaching GBI136 Ecology for the Veterinary Undergraduate Course, Environmental, and Forestry Engineering. From 2014 to 2015, they were a Guest Research Scientist at the Deutsches Zentrum für integrative Biodiversitätsforschung (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. During this time, they also worked as a Data Analysis Consultant for Consultoria Estatística Independente. From 2017 to 2018, they were a Creator Content - Biology | Educational Consultant at DTCOM, where they created content about issues taught in Ecology for undergraduate students. In 2018, they became a Scientist / Assistant Researcher at the NGO - Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado, coordinating a project, capacitating and supervising technicians to implement a field research to monitor wildlife in ecological corridors, restored areas, and forested remnants of Atlantic Rainforest in a Protected Area. Priscila also worked as a Quantitative Researcher at Fundação Norte Fluminense de Desenvolvimento Regional from 2018 to 2022, where they created a dataset from scratch of 100,000 images from remote devices to monitor wildlife species. Priscila used SQL to quickly query this dataset, and also utilized Python for data cleaning, data wrangling, exploratory data analysis, hypothesis testing, inferential statistics, and experimentation, as well as supervised machine learning algorithms, data visualization, image labeling/annotation, and training a Convolutional Neural Network to image classification. Priscila reported results through presentation and technical documents to government, private sector, and the NGO Golden Lion Tamarin Association. Additionally, they managed a fieldwork and data gathering team and mentored students. From 2022 to present, they are a Junior Machine Learning Engineer at Omdena Alexandria Chapter and a Data Scientist at goFlux.

Priscila Lucas, PhD has an extensive education history. Priscila obtained a Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences from Unilavras Centro Universitário in 2008. Priscila then went on to earn their M.Sc. in Animal Behaviour and Biology from Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora in 2012. In 2014, they participated in a Ph.D. exchange program at Leipzig University in Applied Ecology. In 2016, they obtained their Ph.D. in Applied Ecology from Universidade Federal de Lavras.
