Joseph Scalea, MD has a diverse work experience. Joseph is currently the Vice Chair of Surgery, Professor, Executive Medical Director at MUSC Health, and the Director of Kidney Transplant at the Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to this, they were the Founder and Chief Medical Officer at MediGO, Inc., and also served as the Founder and Medical Advisory at MissionGO, Inc. Joseph has been actively involved in the field of transplant surgery, serving as a Committee Member at the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Dr. Scalea has also worked at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where they held multiple roles such as Senior Medical Advisor for Commercialization and Innovation, Surgical Director of Kidney, Pancreas, and Islet Transplantation, and Surgical Director of Pancreas and Islet Cell Transplantation. Joseph gained valuable experience as a Transplant Surgery Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and as a General Surgery Resident at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Additionally, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University.

Joseph Scalea, MD completed their education in a chronological order, starting with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Information Technology, Math, and the Humanities from Virginia Tech, which they obtained in 2002. Joseph went on to attend the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 2003 to 2007, where they earned their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree with a focus on Surgery.

Following their medical degree, Dr. Scalea pursued an Internship in Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 2007 to 2008. Joseph then continued their residency in Surgery at the same institution from 2008 to 2009. Subsequently, they undertook a Post-Doc Fellowship in Transplant Immunology at Harvard University from 2009 to 2011.

Dr. Scalea returned to the University of Maryland School of Medicine for their Senior Residency in an undisclosed field of study, which they completed from 2011 to 2014. In 2015, they obtained certification as a Board Certified General Surgeon from the American College of Surgeons.
