Ryohei Urata

Principal Engineer/Director

Ryohei Urata is a seasoned engineer and researcher with extensive experience in photonics and communications technologies. At Stanford University from January 1999 to April 2004, Ryohei developed a photonic analog-to-digital conversion system while serving as a Research Assistant. Ryohei progressed to NTT Photonics Labs from July 2007 to December 2010, where leadership in optical packet switching R&D and collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs defined Ryohei's role as a Research Specialist and continued as a Post-doctoral Researcher focusing on optoelectronic integrated circuit devices. Since December 2010, Ryohei has worked at Google as a Principal Engineer/Director, responsible for defining and developing the communication technologies that underpin the company's data center infrastructure. Ryohei holds a BS in Engineering Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD and MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
