We have developed a new model that estimates water saturation from compressional and shear sonic logs.
Unlike conventional saturation models, the new model does not require formation resistivity or brine salinity to estimate water saturation.
The new model has significant implications in the evaluation of low resistivity low contrast reservoirs, where resistivity-based saturation models may not be as effective.
Our initial motivation: if we can detect the presence of hydrocarbons from surface seismic data several thousand feet above the reservoir, can we do more with the higher-resolution Acoustic logs?
