O'Comartun's career began as Special Assistant to Mayor Martin O'Malley from December 2002 to January 2007 and includes a tenure as Director of the Irish Institute at Boston College from July 1997 to December 2002. O'Comartun holds a BA and an MA in Political Science from University College Dublin.
